WOW: Back to Shirt Collars

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays

As I try to downsize and minimize, I keep finding things that are too good to throw away quality wise but too boring to keep in their present condition. This week I've been sorting through my wardrobe - and I found some excellent jumpers in need of some revival - so you know what that means? More collars of course! I don't know about you, but I just like collars - on everything! It seems like more and more collars are being neglected on garments and this is not a trend I'm a fan of. In fact, the last few tops I've tried on at the stores have had enormous necklines, really wide and low - I honestly don't know who's wearing them?!

I just love creating collars with my beautiful quilting fabrics. Most of you already know that I've been here before, I do it each winter, it's just fun and so practical as well and a good excuse to allow myself permission to buy extra fabrics - like these here: what do you think?

I know I just finished a set of shirts a few months ago, but its winter now and that means its time for a set of revived jumpers and I've decided that there's just too much black everywhere. Of course, I do love wearing black like so many women, but I'm going to ban it without some beautiful fabric pepping it up on the collar and cuffs. It's my compromise.

I waited years to find clothes that reflected my colouring and were practical as well as stylish - they were few and far between. So, now I just make my own. What about you? Have you been driven to revamp your wardrobe?

What's your WOW ?

  1. HI Esther,
    I have not revamped my wardrobe but I do need some new clothes. I am being a bit stubborn though, as I will not buy any new clothes until I lose some weight. That means I may be wearing rags soon.

  2. Must be the year of shirt making in various forms ... I can't find shirts that match what i have in my wardrobe, so today I am cutting out shirts ... with collars ... to wear on top of or under the clothes which are too good to toss.
    There will be more black added to the wardrobe in future so that there is always something to wear with any clothing item not in the wash!

  3. The beautiful white linen tops with beautiful embellishments that are in my size seem to have been sold before the sales began, so I've decided to add some of my tatting to my latest purchases. I love color, but we are in the midst of high temperatures in New Mexico (hoping for monsoon rains that haven't arrived), so I'm opting for more white.

  4. What a great idea Esther, I haven't made clothes for a long time, but I struggle too with tops, I can never seem to find any I really like.

  5. I am sooo glad I'm not the only one who thinks that the quality of clothing in stores is really going south....
    I live in Africa so wth is happening in the rest of the world?

  7. Esther, I think "jumpers" are sweaters, am I right? Are you stitching the collars directly to the neckline of the sweater, or is it a complete blouse that you are layering beneath the sweater? If it's just an attached collar, how do you handle laundering the finished garment? I love your quilting cottons for this purpose, by the way. The few times I've attempted to sew garments for myself, I made a disastrous mess of trying to do FBA alterations to the patterns and ended up with charity donations rather than anything wearable, so it's hard to get motivated to go down that dark path again. I can never find a tailored blouse in the shops that fits properly, though, so it would be wonderful to be able to make my own!

  8. My wardrobe has been reduced to rags. Like you I have waited for well made, stylish clothes and it has been so many years since they have been made I have rags. I suppose the next step is to stop quilting and to learn to make some things I can wear.
