Shelly on Flash Sale! $4.80 for 48 hours! (Finished)

Shelly is a clamshell quilt pattern perfect for stash busting your favourite fabric scraps. Isn't she gorgeous? I love clamshells - they're so easy to pick up and put down whenener the time or mood suits. Shelly is a clamshell quilt with a twist: the central block consists of four clamshell stacks that meet in the centre with a foliage motif. Between the stacks, you have the option of slotting in some contrast fabrics to create a visible central crossing element and the border repeats the clamshell appeal with more foliage motifs to tie it all together.

I love making clamshells—they’re so quick and easy yet look so great.

I've been shelling away making stacks from my monochromatic stash. I'm still going and have about 50 more to make now. I can't get wait to get this top together. Of course, you know me and yes, I considered lots of different colourways for my clamshell quilt. Red and white was a really strong contender, as was a muted stash of civil war tones. But in the end, I had this really stunning assortment of black and white and grays that just needed to come together. I played around with the idea or a black / white & red theme, but somehow went with a newspaper print instead.

Me? I love it! What do you think?!

'Shelly' by Karen Richardson

Karen Richardson
sent through this pic of Shelly hanging on display.

Isn't it a beauty? Now, from what I remember from comments over in my Group, Karen made this quilt in memory of her brother and it includes his Hawaiian shirts in the fabric selection. This really touched me. As a quilter, I know that every quilt has a story and when you learn and hear about the stories behind the wonderful quilts being made, it make you feel good. It makes you feel connected to other people who are living their lives just as you are: full of hopes, happiness, ideas and sometimes sadness.
Quilts really do become a part of the 'fabric' of our lives and working with fabric to make something tangible out of an idea or memory always touches my heart. I love every inch of this quilt.
A memorial is a beautiful reason for a quilt and I'm honored you picked Shelly when you decided to make yours Karen. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all.

WOW: Making Clamshells for Shelly!

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays
I've fallen into a nice new routine. Each Tuesday I take a Tai Chi class and afterwards I drive to a fabric store right around the corner. I first popped in to find a button one week, but then I started making it a somewhat regular thing to browse the new fabric arrivals and now I find myself in there every single Tuesday without fail. Then, once I've made my purchase, I pop into a cafe across the road for a post fabric coffee. Suffice to say, I love Tuesdays.
My only 'rule' is that I'm only allowed to buy fabric for an active WIP project. As I dedicate each Wednesday to WIPs, this is actually working really well. Yesterday I went in looking for fabrics to finish my Shelly quilt top. I really love my Shelly quilt and am making my own up in a colour scheme very similar to the one below. This was my first colour arrangement and it has just 'stuck' with me. I have used up all the black and white prints from my stash, so I am actively collecting minimum cuts of black and white print fabrics as and when I see them. Yesterday I picked up 12 new prints and I think I might nearly have enough now.
So today I am making clamshells. So easy, so satisfying and the best bit is, I'll end up with this gorgeous quilt for my efforts. It's going to be a fabulous day!

My Quilting Year: Looking Back Over 2017

For me, 2017 has been all about learning and coming to grips with technology. Although the internet hasn't changed the way I create, it has changed the way I communicate and connect with others. And it's been a steep learning curve.

For one thing, this was the year I realized I had to change my BOM installment delivery method. It was a year of technical glitches and trying to understand that sometimes, emails get sent from the server and ping that they have reached the other server... but somehow never make it into the in-box. A double frustration for everyone involved.

Happily I can report that my BOM 2018 file deliveries will be a breeze in comparison. You simply need to log in and download what you want. I wish I'd done this sooner, but you live and learn. Just like Facebook. I resisted moving my BOM Group over to the Facebook platform for y-e-a-r-s, but now I can't imagine doing it anywhere else! The fact is, there is no other platform that allows users to share their work so quickly and easily as Facebook does - and for free. I know a lot of people resist Facebook out of privacy concerns and I was one of those people, but you can set up a private account just to join the Group and it's definitely worthwhile. This year we passed the 7000+ membership mark. Given what a close knit community we are, this number seems staggering. When you're in the Group, it really feels like a cosy get together - thanks to the efforts of our Moderators.

And what about the quilts? Honestly, I design so many quilts that I sometimes forget which ones I've released. So a yearly round up seems like a timely reminder of what I managed to get done these past 12 months.
'Diamond Hill'
It all started with Diamond Hill, my free BOM for 2017. I just loved the idea of an applique BOM full of beautiful 'free range' flowers blooming on a hill, surrounded by steps of glittering diamonds. And BOM wise, all the Diamond Hill beauties out there simply shone - it's a stunning quilt.

'Secret Garden'
Next up was my Mystery BOM, Secret Garden. An intricate applique quilt full of the wonder and beauty of gardens, this design kept me busy all year.

'Hexit'
By March I was thinking about pieced quilts and what to do with all those off cuts that were too nice to throw away. And, oh I love everything about this pieced quilt: it's a foundation pieced wonder that eats up all your scraps and lets you enjoy them in a interesting hex style design. You simply make up your hex's from all your favourite leftovers and then join all the blocks up when you're done. Perfect! I have 3 x Hexit's on the go right now from different fabric scraps and can't wait until they come together one day.

'Egg Hunter Trio'
For Easter I wanted to have some fun with gorgeous prints and a super sweet bunny and bursting tulip heads. I made three versions, all available together, to allow you to choose which best suited your own Easter decor needs. For me, it was always going to be Tulips and I offered this style in both a landscape and portrait arrangement so that everyone could fit some quilted art on their walls.
I can already tell that this trio of wall hangings will be around for years to come
We all know Tulips represent passionate love and the the pussy willow was added to symbolize a bending branch. The last option, the Egg Hunter was all about hunting beneath some gorgeous bunting.

 'Tickled Pink'
In April it was time for some simple but effective piecing and Tickled Pink is another one block wonder. You just work out how to make up the first one and then go from there. The blocks are nice and large and completely accomplish-able - perfect for making up a quilt top in no time at all.

'Mia May'
In May I decided to release a fun and easy small quilt - perfect for cot and crib. The bold, easy applique made it perfect for showing off those gorgeous baby prints.

'Shelly'
In June, it was time to get back to my early days. I have always wanted to make a clamshell quilt and couldn't believe I hadn't got around to releasing my own version yet. Shelly took care of this and I love the pathways these clamshells make when you follow the design.

'Thursday Flowers'
In August I started a wall hanging series of flower designs, made specifically to be shown on walls, gallery style. There are 7 in the series and I released 2 in 2017. The rest are coming in 2018.

'Monday Flowers'

'On My Window, Flowers Bloom'
I ended the year on a high note with a final free mini BOM. This wall hanging applique BOM is all about flowers blooms against a window frame backdrop that shows off a bright or night sky.

Celebrating 10 years
A year passes so quickly and I'd actually forgotten that a few of these beauties happened in 2017 so I'm happy to have given them a final bow before the year is out. Thank you everyone, for supporting me with your incredible encouragement and friendship. It's a pleasure for me to release my patterns out into the world and each year I offer both free and paid designs to those of you interested in taking part in this creative journey with me.

In 2018 I celebrate 10 years of blogging and BOM-ing and it's going to be my biggest year ever.
I can't wait for 2018 to start. It's going to be an amazing creative adventure.

I hope you'll join me..

WOW: New Projects

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays
I've finally got a grip on my vertigo and am feeling back in the swing of things. Thanks so much for all your comments and suggestions here, on Facebook and via email. It all helped. I'd never had vertigo before and when I woke up with it one morning, I thought I must be having a stroke. It was so sudden and debilitating, I really thought it was something serious. Finding out it was just a crystal in the ear put it all into perspective.

I'm still in shock to find out that almost everyone I meet has suffered from it themselves. Who knew it was so common? I felt much better knowing I wasn't alone when I read through the comments, thanks for letting me know how you dealt with it, it put me on the right track.

I ended up following several head twisting protocols on YouTube before finding one that cleared the crystals away by leaning forward (video here) and have been feeling almost back to normal. A few times I suffered dizziness whilst out and about during the day, so sitting down and moving my head side to side got that under control too. Phew! What a lot of fuss!
Anyhow, back to quilting. This week I've been enjoying my morning coffees outside with a few colourful visitors peeking through the leaves. Usually Glenda (our Moderator over in my Group) has lots of exotic things to show us from her corner in tropical QLD, but down my way this is a real treat!

I've been making scallops in my spare time for my Shelly quilt. Finding my Shelly pattern was a real treasure as I found some other patterns I thought I had misplaced and I can't wait to share them with you. Next up, the other design I was working on before my vertigo lull, Koi Garden is now back in full focus. My DD spotted it the other day and would like it as a wall hanging in her home. So I'll be making it as an art quilt and am getting my supplies together for another adventure.

Stay tuned!

'Shelly' my Clamshell Quilt is Launched!

Shelly is my newest clamshell quilt pattern. Isn't she gorgeous? I have been loving clamshells these last few weeks - they're so easy to pick up and put down and now I've almost got enough to make my very own Shelly - and I cannot wait.

WOW: Scallops, Scallops Everywhere..

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays
I adore scallops (or do you call them clamshells?) I've always thought and referred to them as scallops and now I can't get out of the habit. Anyhow, I have a whole stash of gorgeous black and white and grey fabrics that I decided to just start scalloping and stacking up to make a new quilt top.

It's a gorgeous way to stash bust and I'm loving every minute of it. Right now, it's not too demanding on my eyes or mind either which is just what I need. I have a wonderful I pattern designed for scallops and I'm using my Template from that pattern, the only problem is I can't show it to you as I don't know where it is - I simply cannot find it! It's called Shelly and when I come across it, I will be putting all these scallops to use. The only thing I know is the number of scallops I need because I wrote it on my template! For now I will just keep making scallops until Shelly shows up.

Last week I was all excited about Koi Garden and planned on releasing it but then I came down with a 2 day vertigo attack. I'm still not 100% after that and am taking it easy. It means my exciting art quilt plans for Koi Garden have to wait until I feel well enough to tackle it. My vertigo attacks and ear aches are really keeping me mostly away from my screen. I don't have the nerves to sit behind a computer for long enough to do anything with it.

So, it's all about the simple scallops for me today..
